Thank you for your support in ensuring your child has good attendance. Please be reminded that the government expects all children not to miss school due to family holidays. Any child who takes 6 days or more of unauthorised absence will need to be referred to the Local Authority.
Attendance
Dear Parents and Carers,
We are very much looking forward to seeing many of you shortly at our Open Afternoon and hope that you enjoy the opportunity to come into school and for your child to share their learning with you. We hope you can see the progress that your child is making in all aspects of their learning – we are very proud of how the children are applying themselves to their learning and are working hard to achieve their best every day. Our annual reports will be shared with you on Friday 23rd February, and in these you will find additional detail about how your children are doing currently at school. In addition to this, next step targets will be shared with you so that you can support with these at home.
I am often asked about ways in which parents can support with learning at home and one of the nicest and most effective things to do is to read. Read aloud with your child, listen to them read, talk about stories and characters and authors. The more children read and are exposed to a wide range of books, the more progress they make in school. As an avid reader myself, I cannot emphasise enough the importance of reading. At Mabe, we finish every day with story-time – whether the children are 3 years old or 11 years old – the children sit and listen to a quality story being read aloud to them by their teacher. The books that the children listen to are carefully chosen to help support our wider curriculum learning, but also mean that as they journey through our school they will have listened to a wide range of books by a wide range of authors. Within our classrooms, we have recently been updating and reorganising our library areas to support the children with making their own personal reading choices. This week, we also had our Kernow Learning Library Specialist visit to support us in further developing our school library area so that it is used more readily by all our children.
Storytelling week is next week and we have an story teller coming into school on Wednesday who will lead assembly with the whole school, and then facilitate storytelling workshops with Year 3 and Year 5.
Next Friday, 2nd February, it is National Number day and we will be recognising this at Mabe school in a range of ways, including dressing to a theme of numbers! (number, shape, pattern, colour, etc). Our day is based around Mathematics in books and Mrs Pearce will be launching the day with a whole school assembly.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend
We do understand that there is currently an awful lot of illness around which we are definitely seeing the impact of here at Mabe, and our overall attendance has dipped below 94% for the first time this year. When you phone in to inform us of your child’s absence, please do leave as detailed a reason as you can for the absence so that this is reported accurately. If you need any support with your child’s attendance, please do contact us at school and we will be very happy to meet with you and discuss ways in which we can support you.
Mrs Stevens

Today!
Open Afternoon
We would like to invite parents/carers to an opportunity to come into classrooms and look at your child's learning with your child.
Class teachers will also be available for informal conversations during this time.
New PTA Date
We are so very grateful for all the parents who support on our PTA and are always looking to welcome new parents to join us in raising funds for our school. Our next PTA meeting is Wednesday 7th February at 6:00pm. Please come along and support if you are able to.
Parent maths workshops
We have a great opportunity for parents to attend a series of free sessions aimed at helping you support your child with their Maths learning. Multiply (based at Truro and Penwith College) are a government funded project with the goal of improving and supporting Maths skills and confidence. They would offer a series of four free sessions looking at different topics such as number, shape, ratio and measurement (although the content could vary according to parental need). The last session would aim to look at Y6 SATs papers. The sessions will be held at Mabe School and could be once a week, fortnightly or once a month depending on your preference. Any childcare costs could be reimbursed if parents use a registered childminder.
If you are interested, please message Mrs McCarthy or myself on Dojo. Many thanks, Mrs Pearce.
We will be celebrating all things Maths next Friday 2nd February!
Children are invited to come to school wearing maths themed outfits (such as numbers, patterns, shapes or colours)
Personal Development News
At Mabe our personal development programme is threaded throughout our curriculum. Our vision for Personal Development is in line with the CCEA’s definition:
'Encouraging each child to become personally, emotionally, socially and physically effective, to lead , safe and fulfilled lives; To become confident, independent and responsible citizens, making informed and responsible choices and decisions throughout their lives’
This week as part of our Personal Development programme:
and we learnt about the water cycle and how it rains. Mr Cruse wowed us all
with a fact that because of the water cycle we are drinking the same water
that the dinosaurs drank!

In maths we will be developing our language for comparing length.
In RE we will be retelling the story of Chanukah.
We look forward to Number Day next Friday, when we will be using the book ‘Little Miss Twins’ to explore multiplying by 2.
In Science we will be observing how states of matter change and how this relates to the water cycle.
In PE, Herons will compete in games of badminton.
We will be visiting Newquay Zoo as part of our learning in Science.
